After Aunt J teaches Pattyn how to ride a horse, she tells Pattyn that they will to be going up into the mountains soon to move her long horned cows. Aunt J talked to Ethan, the boy that she saw when she first got into town that she thought was cute, when they went to the feed store and asked him to go help them. Pattyn was excited to get to spend time with him, but was nervous because she wasn't very good at riding horses. One day she decided to practice riding by herself and ended up sideways on the horse because she didn't have saddle tight enough, and Ethan showed up right as she fell off. He stayed for dinner and the two of them started to get to know each other.

Aunt J knew that Pattyn thought Ethan was cute. Aunt J mentioned it one night when they were making dinner. Aunt J told Pattyn that she thought Ethan liked her but Pattyn didn't believe her because she didn't think she was very pretty. They also talked about Derek, and Aunt J told her that you only find true love once if you're lucky. So Pattyn asked if she had ever found true love and she told her a story about a boy named Kevin that she was in love with when she was younger. Pattyn's father (Aunt J's brother) caught the two of them "in the act" and held a gun to both of their heads and told them if they ever saw each other again he would kill both of them. So they didn't continue to see each other.

On the journey to move the cattle, Pattyn was in awe over Ethan. When they finally got the cattle moved to the field that they were going to be left in, Pattyn realized that they would be staying the night there because it was almost dark. Ethan and Pattyn set their bed roles up side by side and talked. Before they went to sleep Ethan kissed Pattyn and she slept on his shoulder the whole night. Later he told her that he really liked her and wanted to continue to see her if it was alright with her, and of course it was. They became inseparable. One day they went for a trail ride on the horses and stopped for a picnic. As they were "talking" a cougar came down from the mountain for a drink from the river. Their horses broke free and ran home and they picked up sticks and rocks to throw at the cougar. Pattyn hit the cougar with a big rock and it retreated back into the mountains. Then later on they went back up with a hunting party to kill the cat.

Aunt J and Pattyn were going to go to the Fourth of July celebrations in town and Ethan and his father were going to meet them there. Pattyn noticed that Aunt J was wearing really nice clothes and even put some makeup on and wondered if there was a guy that she was going to be seeing in town that she liked. When they got to town, Ethan and his father met up with them and Ethan introduced Pattyn to his father, Kevin. She noticed that Aunt J and Kevin already knew each other quite well and then she realized that he was the Kevin that she was in love with. Pattyn and Ethan left and left Kevin and Aunt J to do some catching up to enjoy the festivities and would catch up with them later when they went home.
