I decided to change my book for the assignment to Burned by Ellen Hopkins. In the first 200 pages of this book, Pattyn, the main character, is a Mormon girl that doesn't exactly believe in what she is being taught in church. She starts having dreams that go against what her religion teaches and becomes confused. She doesn't have any friends, besides her sister Jackie. One day she is shooting targets in a field near her house and some fellow classmates stop and talk to her. Derek, the best friend of her secret crush, shows her some attention and she likes it and they end up dating. She goes behind her parents backs to see him because he isn't Mormon and her parents wouldn't allow her to see him. Her father catches her drinking and hanging out with Derek one day when she is "target shooting" and her parents ship her off to stay with her aunt. Before she leaves for her aunts house, Derek dumps her and is a total jerk to her.
Her aunt, Aunt J, lives on a farm and teaches Pattyn how to ride a horse and drive a car. Pattyn is happy to get away from her home life because all she would do back home is change diapers and raise the rest of her parents seven children. Her dad abuses her mother and is an alcoholic. She sees a guy when she first arrives at her aunts that she thinks is really cute.
